Carlton Yacht Club can be best described, we think, with two words that marry one another as nicely as their meaning separately. Charmingly Friendly.
This bar, somewhat resembling a New York-style dive bar, has a certain character about it. It’s in the artwork that lines the walls. It’s in the dark wooden bartop, polished yet rustic and worn. It’s in the twinkling lights, the speckled greens, the modest and humble layout of the land. The bottles atop bottles, dark corners and pulled blinds.
And it certainly is in the pure joy of the people that work there. Just walk in and have a seat and friendliness will find you. The staff, masters at cocktails and knowledgable in all things that sparkle in glasses and burn or sweeten on the way down, exude an almost nostalgic comradeship.
They know each other, and they most likely know or will get to know you. We cannot help but fall just a little in love with this place. It’s not a typical Lygon kind of place. It’s a bar. It’s a pub. It’s a nightlife spot for those who are attracted to things that are just a little different.
Walking into the Carlton Yacht Club is like walking into a postcard of better days. An old school song, or a time we like to think back to with a smile.
They opened their doors in August of 2002. Almost two decades have gone by and the Carlton Yacht Club has quickly grown in reputation among Carltonites and Melbournians. It’s a refuge and one that serves some damn good drinks.
