Yet another lockdown, yet another restriction, yet another miserable day, yadda dadda dadda. It sucks but at least the weather is getting better and hey, there’s about a hundred other countries on earth we’d all rather not be right now than here in good old, true blue, Australia.
So, anyway, you’re home, you’re bored, and it’s a bit of a hassle to cook every day. You got things to do! Someone’s gotta sit on the couch watching reruns of New Girl and Friends, right?
Well, we got you. In our special lockdown edition series, we will explore some of the delicious choices of lockdown takeaways in our neck of the woods. Whether it’s coffee, breakfast, brunch, dinner, comfort food, Asian, Italian, healthy or sweet…don’t worry ya’ll…we got you!
In this edition, we take a look at North Melbourne. The hidden gem where we all pray that the rest of Melbourne doesn’t find out how awesome it is. So, sit back and take note!
Hot Poppy Cafe
A menu filled with all the favourites, Hot Poppy is Melbourne’s cafe. A simple, down to earth, unpretentious cafe that has seen its family grow over the decades and has been through all the tribulations that Melbourne’s been through. We can’t recommend this one enough. So, next time you’re strolling down Errol Street and in the mood for a coffee or a treat, or sitting at home wondering what to eat, this is the place.
All your favourites are available 6AM to 2PM via takeaway

The food is awesomely delicious. We could go into seasonal ingredients, specials, the one-page menu that somehow is more than enough, the burgers, the waffles, the bacon, the this and the that, but all that will do is cause our mouths to water and your mouths to dribble. Apart from a pretty nice list of takeaways, Auction Rooms, like many other places, are doing bread, jams and other great stuff, including coffee beans, you can buy from right inside the cafe.

Twenty & Six Espresso
Their menu is always on point. How do I know, you ask? Because even though I might live about a block away, I have probably ordered around a thousand chilli scrambled eggs and chorizo sausages from here, with escargot, french toast and fruit, and coffee. So yeah, I know. Lots of locally sourced ingredients, deliciously fresh made juices, seasonal produce straight from Queen Victoria Market and cooked to mouth-watering satisfaction.

Gai Wong has gotten a cult following, and rightly so! It’s been showing up on top Melbourne eatery lists for a while now and we did a special on just how incredible they are! And whether it’s Hainanese Chicken Rice, Kon Lo Mee with Char Siew, or Gai See Hor Fun, one thing’s for sure, there’s a little of that secret ingredient in each dish.

Joe Taylor Bar / Oskar Pizza
Joe Taylors and Oskar Pizza are one in the same, and we love em! A fantastic local bar stocked to the brim with all the delicious cocktails and nibblies you can want, with a great ambience, great service and nothing but smiles all the way. During lockdown Joe’s and Oskar’s, who I come to think of as two brothers that spend their days mulling over creations in their kitchens, are offering up cocktails and food to go! Yep, now you can enjoy the tastes and smells and aromas of a night out at home with a family member or a bubble buddy!

North End Cafe
There’s something just so enjoyable about this place. So personal and invigorating. Every sandwich, every dessert, every cup of coffee is made by hand and served with warmth and affection. It’s just another on a long list of reasons why you should support your local, because, without the community, places that are this good during times like these will struggle more than they should. And we are so glad that North End Cafe is up there!
