Inspired by the hustle and bustle streets of Thailand, infused with tastes of Vietnam, China and Laos, Mum Mum Street is a portrait of south-east Asian cuisine and character.
Mum Mum Street is a narrow, comfy spaced, modern styled restaurant in the heart of Victoria Street, a stone throw away from Queen Vic Market. Its interior is non-intrusive. It’s a simple layout, grid tables and chairs, with a small bar stocked with wines and spirits at the far end. Its greyscale cement walls lend a kind of framework to the true star of the restaurant, the food.
The menu is, to put it mildly, delicious. The chefs know what they’re doing. With each dish, you can understand the inspirations, the spices, the origins and the history of the food. Presentation is neither too much nor too little. The centrepiece of the dishes stands out among the bright colours of Asian cuisine. Thai yellows and Vietnamese greens, Chinese reds and whites, the colours of nature seem to only enhance the absolute pleasure of eating here.

Melbourne is certainly one of the most diverse, multicultural cities in Australia. Its Asian community is large. Thai, Veit, Chinese, Laos, you won’t find a shortage of places that serve one or the other or a little of both, or all, like Mum Mum. But what Mum Mum does different, is they give you a place to feel like these dishes, these cultures, are special in another way.
Asain cuisine, especially Thai, is often thought of as a kind of takeaway special. Nothing too fancy. Nothing to chic. In looking at Mum Mum Street, you can’t help but feel that what these award-winning chefs are doing is taking that concept, that street food vendor style homeworld experience, and elevating it.
Bringing to the forefront something special. An experience that lets you enjoy the energy of Thailand streets, with the patience and wisdom of those who love the food and understand how to cook it.
