MEDIA RELEASE:
Queen Victoria Market has significantly increased the capacity of its on-site customer car parking with the opening of a new 500-space undercover car park.
Open to the public from Friday 9 July, the car park marks the next significant milestone in the City of Melbourne’s Queen Victoria Market Precinct Renewal Program.
Located on the Market’s doorstep on the corner of Queen and Therry Streets, the undercover car park is the first public facility to open as part of the new Munro Development.
When fully completed in 2022, the development will also include affordable housing, community facilities, a boutique hotel, complementary hospitality and retail stores, plus new open spaces and laneways.
Queen Victoria Market now boasts more than 1,000 car park spaces for visitors: with 500 spaces in the new undercover car park including 12 e-chargers for electric vehicles and the remaining 500+ spaces in the existing open air car park.
Queen Victoria Market CEO Stan Liacos says the opening of the new undercover car park is a great milestone for the Market and will help improve convenience and customer experience at Queen Victoria Market.
“The Market’s new secure undercover car park offers shoppers the convenience of cheaper short-stay parking right in the heart of the Market, allowing visitors to experience everything Queen Victoria Market has to offer, including fresh produce, cafés, restaurants and specialty shopping, at reduced parking rates,” Mr Liacos said. “Our customers and traders have told us they want greater access to affordable parking in close proximity to the Market and we are delighted to be able to deliver this.”
Lord Mayor Sally Capp said $45 million is being invested in renewal projects this financial year, creating hundreds of jobs and revitalising the Market precinct.
“We’re supporting our city economy and creating 500 new building and construction jobs from our investment in the Market precinct,” the Lord Mayor said. “It’s more important than ever that we get on with renewal to protect everything that is great about the Market – for shoppers, traders, visitors and all Melburnians. The opening of the new car park is good news for the more than 600 small businesses at the Market that need our support.
“We’re also progressing plans to deliver a 1.75 hectare ‘peoples’ park on the site of the current asphalt car park. This new open space in the heart of the city will be a place where local residents and visitors can connect and enjoy the Market experience,” the Lord Mayor said.
The Munro site is expected to deliver an estimated $70 million of public benefit to the growing northern CBD precinct in one of Australia’s most sustainable mixed-use developments.
