The traditions of Papa Gino’s

What is Melbourne, if not an ever-changing tapestry? A fabric woven from cultures, tastes, sounds, and stories, all bound by a shared thread: the dream of a better future. Papa Gino’s reminds us that it’s not only the destination but the beginnings and the journeys in between that make a story worth telling – and a place worth sitting down to eat in.

And where did this story begin? On Lygon Street, of course.

In 1957, Gino and Silvana Brosca immigrated from Italy with little more than hope, determination, and a love of food. By 1973, that spirit took root in the form of Papa Gino’s – a restaurant that would grow into part of Melbourne’s own family. Hard work, laughter, and the aroma of good cooking turned those first nights into fifty years of memories.

The journey continued for them. They served some of Melbourne’s best Italian food. People came, stories were told, laughs were had, wine was shared. The kids grew up, Lygon Street became a go-to destination for authentic Italian meals, the kids took over, the restaurant kept flourishing, and the tapestry grew. New threads, characters and colours were added.

A few years ago, Papa Gino’s celebrated its 50th Anniversary. 50 years!

Over the decades, Papa Gino’s became more than just a place to eat. Brick walls lined with old photographs, the bright red sign glowing like a beacon, and the familiar scent of thin-crust pizzas and hearty pastas made it a constant presence in countless lives. Families grew up here, friendships were forged here, and Lygon Street’s reputation as Melbourne’s “Little Italy” was shaped here.

Now, more than 50 years later, the smells of thin-crust Margheritas, Marinaras, and Capricciosa still fill the place as they make their way through crowded tables. Spaghetti Bolognese, Spaghetti Marinara, Lasagne, and Amatriciana still bring smiles to patrons as they sip a glass of red. Favourites like Veal Parmigiana, Chicken Parmigana, Chicken Cacciatora, and Veal Scallopini keep bringing the old and new through the doors. While Italian classic desserts like Tartufo, Tiramisu &  Cassata complete the experience.

These traditions keep Papa Gino’s authenticity alive, but it is also tradition that traditions can and should change. In 2024, Papa Gino’s was entrusted to Sumit and Roshan, who first joined the restaurant family in 2016. Like the Broscas before them, they came to Melbourne with their own dreams of a better future. Now, with a passion for the classics and a vision for the years ahead – seasonal specials, subtle updates, and a fresh energy – they are adding their own threads to Melbourne’s tapestry.

There’s no doubt that Sumit and Roshan will continue that journey. And there is no doubt that all those who call Melbourne home will be along for the ride. I know I will.

We highly recommend Papa Gino’s.

Bon Appetit.
